Top 5 Books of 2022

divider

Happy 2023! I read some amazing books last year. Mostly fun ones that held my attention and distracted me when I was feeling pretty shitty. When I first started my blog I felt so much pressure to read certain books and to read as many books as possible. Especially when I started a Booktube channel. The pressure was immense to diversify and read the books we’re all “supposed” to read. I completely put this on myself and I’m so glad I’ve let it all go now. Reading was losing its spark for me. Now I’m back to reading what I feel like when I feel like. I’m saying all this to warn you there won’t be any high-brow, intellectual or culturally significant books on this list. These are the 5 books I read this year that I freakin devoured. The ones that kept me up all night (literally till sunrise) because I loved the characters and story so much.

Number 5

These Twisted Bonds by Lexi Ryan

Rating: 4.5 out of 5.

This is the final in a young adult fantasy romance released in 2022. I was lucky enough to get my hands on a Digital Review Copy from NetGalley just after buying the first book so I was able to read them back to back. This duology is most definitely not the best thing ever written, I have several issues with the pacing and characters but my god, did it suck me in! Bear in mind there is a heavy love triangle in this but it’s the kind of one I love to read. So angsty and annoying but impossible to put down.

Number 4

A Shadow in the Ember by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Rating: 5 out of 5.

It was difficult to not compare this to the Blood and Ash books while reading. I kept looking for signs that Sera and Nyktos were just copies of Cas and Poppy but I was very happy to discover they are well-constructed independent characters. I absolutely love the progression of Sera and Nytos’s relationship through this (enemies to lovers 😍) and all the backstory and development we get for this universe. I absolutely LOVE a well-developed fantasy world.

Number 3

Book Lovers by Emily Henry

Rating: 5 out of 5.

By far my favourite from Emily Henry so far. I really dislike all the cover designs for her books though. If there wasn’t so much buzz for her books I would never have read them. The cover doesn’t affect the story, of course, I just really hate them. I would avoid them in a bookstore because I would hate the sight of them in my house. Thank god for e-readers and tablets! Henry puts a little twist on the “business person from the big city goes to the small town” trope with this one that is refreshing without being too pushy or preachy. There’s a bit of an enemies-to-lovers thing going on here too but they become friends pretty quickly. The best thing about this book is the banter between Nora and Charlie which is just fantastic. Henry is amazing at writing quick-witted and natural-feeling dialogue that makes you fall totally in love with the characters.

Number 2

Love on the Brain by Ali Hazelwood

Rating: 5 out of 5.

Ali Hazelwood is quickly becoming a top-tier favourite author of mine. She has already made it onto my auto-buy list after reading two of her books (and her fanfiction on AO3). It wouldn’t surprise me if her next release gets the top spot next year cause this one was inching pretty dang close to it.

Hazelwood writes contemporary enemies-to-lovers stories better than anyone else (in my opinion anyway). She just gets the dynamic really well and doesn’t push them into friendship too soon.

2022 Book of the Year

Ten Trends to Seduce Your Best Friend by Penny Reid

Rating: 5 out of 5.

I loved this book so much!!! I wish I had the words to describe how and why in detail but I don’t. I just loved it. I read it twice last year and I will most likely read it again this year. I got the ebook and audiobook and will likely get a print copy in the future. I plan on getting a signed one when Reid reopens her website shop.
